Happy new year to all! It’s that time of year again…New Year resolutions. This year, as with most, one of the most popular goals will be to find a new job and with some luck many of you will find yourselves interviewing before you know it. Being on the other side of the desk I wanted to discuss one of the most common questions I get asked by candidates who are starting their search, when or how should I bring up the salary/wage issue??
The issue can be debated by many and there is probably not a 100% perfect answer, however in most instances I have found that there is one basic concept to keep in mind that can be helpful and prevent you from making an interviewing mistake, let the employer bring up the salary topic first. Keep in mind it is quite common, especially in situations where there is a multiple interview process, for the question of salary to not even be mentioned in the first interview. In general the topic of salary will be one of the last issues discussed so it may not come up until the second or even third interview. Also keep in mind that if an employer is working with an agency the employer may decide to not even discuss the issue directly with you and prefer to go through the recruiter to make a formal offer. This is not unusual and in many cases can be very beneficial since the recruiter can in most cases make sure you are getting the best offer possible.
Once the employer brings up the salary/wage issue be prepared, do your research, and have an idea of what the typical salary range is for the given position you are interviewing for. State your desired rate and give performance and experience related reasons for why you believe you deserve such a rate. Be confident but not arrogant in your wage/salary request, a well prepared and confident employee always makes a good impression.
Good luck to everyone in meeting your New Year aspirations and remember you can always call DMC with any employment questions you may have.
