How much experience do you have as a medical biller and have you worked in the speciality for which you are being considered?
If you are new to the medical billing field, be honest about what you have and haven’t done so far; express how your previous work experience relates to the medical billing environment.
If you do have previous experience, in addition to talking about the years of billing, elaborating on how you worked is useful information. For instance, did you have regular meetings with your team? Did you meet with doctors? Tell them how much time have you spent in your medical billing career working remotely and how much time you have spent working on-site as a medical billing specialist.
How do you handle denied claims?
The process for handling a denied claim can vary from office to office. You probably won’t know how the potential employer handles denied claims, so in this scenario answer the question by giving them the process or processes you’ve used in the past and what you found most efficient in your medical billing career to solve challenging issues. Also explain how you worked with people in order to resolve the denial; for instance, did you work with a doctor directly when a claim was denied?
How do you handle difficult patient-collection cases?
Be prepared to discuss how you’ve dealt with patients in the past. What were the processes in place to work directly with a patient and what have your results been when you’ve needed to interact directly with a patient?
What continuing education have you had?
This question will tell the employer where your knowledge is the most specialized. So if you have years of experience and years of CEUs under your belt, tailor your answer to the type of medical billing work you hope to do with this employer.
How have you handled difficult doctors in the past?
A medical biller’s people skills are very important when dealing with the physicians for which they bill. This answer will tell your interviewer how talented you are at keeping situations diffused while getting the information you need.
