It’s that time of year. As the air gets cooler and leaves change colors in the North and East, snowbirds start packing for warmer climates. Many Arizona officials are counting on snowbirds coming to the state to boost the local economy. Canada snowbirds alone bring about $1.4 billion to Arizona each year.
The Phoenix area has become a popular destination for snowbirds because the cost of living is cheaper and the weather is better than in Florida. An estimated 300,000 people come here to stay all winter long. Some will love it so much that they’ll stay permanently. Sun City is home to a large retiree population, both permanent and seasonal.
Another reason snowbirds choose the Phoenix area is the access to world-class healthcare. Seven Arizona hospitals are in the U.S.News & World Report’s 2023 list of Best Regional Hospitals. The Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix tops the list for the state. However, there is a growing need for healthcare employees in hospitals and other medical facilities. A recent report by Leapfrog Group, which monitors hospital safety processes, accident prevention, and medical errors, showed that overstressed Arizona hospitals struggle to keep patients safe from healthcare-associated infections. The experts place some of the blame on insufficient staff to care for patients adequately.
We’ve discussed the growing need for healthcare employees in Arizona many times. We will see that need grow exponentially this winter as snowbirds descend on the Phoenix metropolitan area. Many choose Arizona because the hot, dry climate helps them cope better with chronic health conditions like asthma, arthritis, allergies, and seasonal affective disorder (SAD). While they’re here, they’ll use emergency departments or urgent care facilities for doctor’s visits, treatments, and tests. Additionally, they’ll need prescriptions filled or home care services. There will also be an increased need for support and administrative positions to keep up with the snowbird demand.
