Desert Medical Careers has been placing physician assistants in a wide variety of jobs for over 20 years. Many times we are asked what are the “best” jobs in a field. It’s been our experience that the best physician assistant jobs can be ranked a number of ways, including
- the best paying
- longest lasting
- best environment
- and best work schedule
Best Physician Assistant Jobs by Pay
We’ve learned that specialty offices seem to pay better. Some of the top-paying specialties are:
- Dermatology, especially if the office performs a lot of cosmetic procedures.
- Emergency medicine.
- Orthopedic surgery.
- Urgent care clinics.
- Family and Adult medicine.
Another factor to take into consideration is geography. Desert Medical Careers places healthcare workers in positions throughout the United States and has seen that physician assistant jobs in the western part of the United States make slightly better average wages than the rest of the country.

Best Work Schedules for Physician Assistants
Physician assistant positions that offer 4 10-hour shifts are sought after more than a 5-day a week schedule because the flexible schedule lends itself to more of a balanced lifestyle. Clinics that typically don’t see emergency patients are going to provide a more reliable schedule, whereas emergency care positions, urgent care clinics, and surgical positions will frequently have availability for PA shifts on the evenings and weekends. Dermatology clinics and quick care clinics are more likely to have standard business hours for their PAs.
Longest Lasting Physician Assistant Jobs
While it is not for everyone, we have seen that most physician assistants stay at their jobs longer when they are given the option to work 4 10-hour work weeks. In addition to a 4-day work week, the longest lasting jobs are ones where the Physician Assistant isn’t overworked.
Best Work Environments for Physician Assistants
We have found that most physician assistants prefer team environments, support from colleagues, and a smooth office team so workflow is less stressful. Urgent Care Clinics, for example, pay well but they are usually not designed to function in a team environment.
PAs are also careful to find out the motivators of the office for which they are considering working; for instance, we get a lot of questions about whether the office places personalized patient care above performance numbers.

Best Physician Assistant Jobs Begin with the PA
Knowing if you are someone who prefers teamwork, independent work, fast-paced or slower-paced environments is critical when you are working with a recruiter to find the best physician assistant job for you. If you can tell your recruiter what type of work environments and schedules have worked best for you in the past, it will help the recruiter get you a far more satisfying job than if you simply focus on pay rate or finding the first available position.
