Medical Assistant Job Outlook
If you are considering a career as a medical assistant and are wondering about the job outlook for this career, we have good news! Medical assisting is one of the fastest growing career fields and is expected to grow 23 percent between 2014 and 2024, significantly higher than the national average.
The entire healthcare industry is forecast to grow faster than any other sector of the economy, increasing to 5 trillion dollars by 2022. This is due to many factors including the high number of people covered by health insurance under the Affordable Care Act, the aging population of the baby boomer generation, and increases in health problems like obesity. One of the main areas of spending for the healthcare industry is labor, including medical assisting, so as the health industry grows, it stands to reason that the medical assisting field will continue to grow in tandem.
It is also worth noting that the fastest growing venue for medical assistant employment is outpatient care centers, where jobs are projected to increase by 57 percent. Hospitals have the slowest growth rate of any venue at around 9 percent, but they are still the largest employers with 7,100 new jobs.

Medical Assistant Career Trends
To remain competitive in the rapidly growing field of medical assisting it is important to stay informed about the latest healthcare trends. Employers are increasingly looking for medical assistants who have a combination of clinical skills and electronic administration skills. Remaining up to date on the latest technology and trends will give you a leg up on the competition as you look for your next medical assistant job.
One trend that will have an impact on medical assistants is the use of electronic medical records. The Affordable Care Act provides monetary incentives through the Medicare EHR Incentive Program to doctors and hospitals that can demonstrate Meaningful Use of certified electronic health records (EHRs). With these new Meaningful Use regulations, the ability to handle electronic healthcare records is becoming increasingly important.
Certification will also become more important for medical assistants because the Meaningful Use requirements in the ACA specify that only certified medical assistants will count toward Meaningful Use statistics. Doctors offices and hospitals will be able to earn incentives for employing certified medical assistants and uncertified medical assistants will not qualify them for incentives.
